Privacy Policy
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how Gavelocity LLC ("Gavelocity," "we," "our," or "us") collects, uses, discloses, and safeguards information when you use our website at gavelocity.com, our API, email digests, and related services (collectively, the "Service").
Gavelocity aggregates publicly available court opinions and provides AI-generated summaries for legal professionals, researchers, and the general public. This Privacy Policy is incorporated into and forms part of our Terms & Conditions. By accessing or using the Service, you acknowledge this Privacy Policy and consent to the practices it describes. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
2. Information We Collect
The Service is designed around data minimization: there are no user accounts, no login, and no profiles.
2.1 Information You Provide
- Email Address: If you opt in to the daily digest, we collect your email address and subscription status (double opt-in confirmation and unsubscribe tokens)
- Communications: Information you choose to include when you contact us
2.2 Automatically Collected Information
- Preferences Identifier: If a future saved-opinions feature is enabled, a randomly generated identifier stored in your browser's localStorage (not linked to your name or identity). The Service does not currently create one.
- Preferences: Settings such as theme, case-type selection, and terms acknowledgment, stored locally in your browser
- Server Logs: Standard request metadata (IP address, user agent, timestamp) processed by our hosting provider for security and abuse prevention
- Technical and Log Data: IP address, browser type, device information, pages viewed, and standard server log data processed by our hosting infrastructure for security, delivery, and performance purposes
2.3 Information We Do NOT Collect
- Account credentials, names, or identity profiles — the Service has no user accounts
- Full payment card numbers — if we introduce paid features, payments will be handled by third-party payment processors, and we will not store full card numbers on our systems
- Sensitive personal information such as health records or government identification numbers
- The content of your private communications or legal documents — the opinions we process are public court records
3. How We Use Information
- Service Delivery: Operate the Service, deliver the email digest you request, and remember your preferences
- Security and Integrity: Detect, prevent, and respond to abuse, fraud, scraping, and technical issues
- Improvement: Understand aggregate usage patterns to improve the Service
- Communication: Respond to inquiries and provide notices about the Service
- Legal: Comply with applicable law and establish, exercise, or defend legal claims
Where laws such as the EU or UK GDPR apply, we process personal information on the legal bases of consent (e.g., the email digest), legitimate interests (e.g., security, service operation and improvement), and compliance with legal obligations. The Service is operated from and directed to users in the United States.
No Sale or Targeted Advertising: We do not sell personal information, and we do not share personal information with third parties for cross-context behavioral or targeted advertising.
4. Cookies, Local Storage, and Tracking
The Service uses browser localStorage and functionally necessary cookies for preferences, device identification, and session functionality. We do not use third-party advertising cookies or cross-site tracking pixels.
Because we do not engage in cross-site tracking, the Service does not respond differently to "Do Not Track" or Global Privacy Control signals — there is no sale or sharing to opt out of. You can clear localStorage and cookies through your browser settings at any time; doing so will reset your locally stored preferences.
5. How We Share Information
We share information only in these limited circumstances:
- Service Providers: Vendors that process data on our behalf to operate the Service — including hosting and content delivery (e.g., Cloudflare), transactional email delivery (e.g., Resend), and AI providers used to generate summaries. The text sent to AI providers consists of public court opinions, not your personal information.
- Legal Requirements: When we believe in good faith that disclosure is required by law, subpoena, court order, or other legal process
- Protection of Rights: To enforce our Terms & Conditions or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Gavelocity, our users, or others
- Business Transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets, in which case the successor will be bound by this Privacy Policy or a successor policy
6. Third-Party Sites and Services
The Service links to third-party websites, including official court websites hosting the underlying opinions. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of third-party sites, and this Privacy Policy does not apply to them. Review their policies before providing information.
7. Data Retention
We retain personal information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, unless a longer period is required or permitted by law. In particular:
- Email subscriptions: Retained until you unsubscribe, after which the address is removed from the active mailing list
- Preferences: Stored only in your browser, and retained until you clear your browser storage
- Logs and technical data: Retained for limited periods consistent with security and operational needs
8. Security
We use commercially reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information, including encryption of data in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and access controls. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot and do not guarantee absolute security. You use the Service and transmit information at your own risk, and to the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for unauthorized access, use, or disclosure beyond our reasonable control. If we become aware of a breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you and regulators as required by applicable law.
9. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under applicable privacy laws — such as the Illinois Personal Information Protection Act, the California Consumer Privacy Act, or other state or national privacy laws — to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a portable copy of your personal information, and to opt out of certain processing. We honor these requests as and to the extent required by the law that applies to you, and we do not discriminate against you for exercising them.
- Email digest: Unsubscribe at any time using the link in any digest email
- Local data: Clear your browser's localStorage and cookies to remove your locally stored preferences
- Other requests: Email privacy@gavelocity.com; we will respond within the time required by applicable law
We may need to verify your request, and we may deny requests where permitted by law (for example, where we cannot verify the requester or the information must be retained for legal reasons).
10. International Users
The Service is hosted and operated in the United States, and information we collect is processed in the United States and other jurisdictions where our service providers operate, which may not provide the same level of data protection as your home jurisdiction. By using the Service, you understand and consent to the transfer and processing of your information in the United States.
11. AI-Generated Content
- AI-Generated Content: The Service uses artificial intelligence to summarize public court opinions. Summaries may contain errors — always review the underlying opinion.
- No Legal Advice; No Attorney-Client Relationship: The Service provides information only.
- See Sections 3–5 of our Terms & Conditions for the full disclaimers, which govern your use of AI-generated content.
12. Children's Privacy
The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact privacy@gavelocity.com and we will delete it.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the Effective Date and Version above, and for material changes we will provide notice through the Service. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
